Use native Contact Pickers
Cory Simmons
Contacts need to be searched over directly in the app in 99% of cases.
Fetching 1000 contacts takes forever. Searching and/or sorting those contacts takes forever.
Native contact picker is really fast.
Here's a plugin you can look at to start with: https://github.com/LynxITDigital/react-native-contacts-wrapper
This solves several related feature requests.

Evan Bacon do you happen to know where this feature falls on the current roadmap as of today? It seems similar in nature to Contacts.presentFormAsync, except that function is only for reading a particular contact natively. I think a lot of apps will typically want to select a contact from the native list view, rather than control the list themselves

Trevor Healy: I'd be happy to review a PR for this feature but the priority right now is finishing the flexibility between bare and managed workflow so users can seamlessly add any custom native code.

Evan Bacon: I really appreciate your offer and love to see all that you and the team are coming up with regard to EAS. I wish I could take you up on that PR review, but unfortunately, I wouldn't even know where to begin making a native mobile contribution - it's a foreign domain for me as a web engineer and one of the reasons I love your platform 😅 Either way, thanks for letting me know!

is feature exists now in expo or not?
Evan Bacon
Opened an issue! This should be a pretty simple feature to add given how robust the current contacts framework is 💙 https://github.com/expo/expo/issues/2645 this is pretty low priority but if someone wants to take a stab at it, that'd be liiiit 😁🔥

Does this native-contacts-wrapper work on expo?
